Principles in Practice - 11. November
This new section will link each month's Step and Tradition to the related principle. It will offer a short reflection or quote and a question for meditation or journaling.
|
|
Spiritual Principle: Awareness
Step 11: “Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood God...” Tradition 11: “Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion...”
Step 11 invites stillness. Through prayer or quiet reflection, we reconnect with our inner guide. Spiritual awareness grows when we listen deeply, when we slow down enough to feel the presence of something loving within and around us.
Reflection Prompt: How can I make space today to listen inwardly with openness?

Understanding the CoDA National Service Committee (NSC): Why It Matters to All of Us
In CoDA, we learn that recovery is a shared journey. One built on connection, service, and unity. At the heart of that shared effort in the UK is the CoDA National Service Committee (NSC). But what exactly is the NSC, and why does it matter to every member, not just those who serve on it?
What is the CoDA National Service Committee?
The National Service Committee is the trusted servant body that supports the functioning of CoDA across the UK. It helps ensure that meetings, members, and groups can continue to carry the message of recovery to those who still suffer. The NSC coordinates national matters such as:
- Communication between local groups and CoDA UK as a whole.
- Maintaining our website, literature, and meeting lists.
- Supporting new meetings and groups.
- Acting as a link between CoDA UK and CoDA World Fellowship.
- Organising or assisting national events and business meetings.
In short, the NSC is a service hub that keeps our fellowship connected, informed, and thriving.
Why is the NSC Important?
Without a functioning NSC, it would be difficult for CoDA in the UK to operate smoothly. Service at the national level ensures that:
- The message of recovery reaches newcomers across the country.
- Our fellowship maintains unity and consistency of principles.
- CoDA UK continues to grow, evolve, and serve members effectively.
Every task, from updating meeting information to managing finances, is an act of service that supports recovery at both individual and group levels.
Why Are NSC Meetings Important?
NSC meetings are where trusted servants and members come together to share updates, make collective decisions, and ensure transparency and accountability in how CoDA UK operates. These meetings are guided by the Twelve Traditions and Twelve Service Concepts, ensuring that decisions reflect group conscience rather than individual opinion.
Attending these meetings also helps keep our fellowship healthy by:
- Fostering open communication between meetings and the NSC.
- Encouraging shared responsibility for CoDA’s future.
- Allowing members to ask questions, give feedback, and learn more about how CoDA functions beyond their home group.
Why Should All CoDA Members Attend?
Every CoDA member has a voice and a stake in how our fellowship grows. The NSC meetings are open to all, not just committee members. When you attend, you:
- Witness the spirit of service in action.
- Learn how decisions are made and how you can get involved.
- Contribute your experience, strength, and hope to the collective conscience of CoDA UK.
- Strengthen your own recovery by connecting with the wider fellowship.
Service and participation are cornerstones of recovery. Just as we practice honesty and openness in meetings, attending an NSC meeting is another way to stay connected, informed, and engaged in the shared mission of CoDA: carrying the message of hope and healing.

CoDA Meetings Update
NSC guidelines for running meetings and events with a specific focus
When running a meeting or an event with a specific focus, for example men’s meetings, women’s meetings, LGBTQIA+ groups etc, it’s important to ensure that all those who seek recovery are made welcome, and to remember that CoDA has no opinion on outside issues.
The CoDA programme emphasises the spiritual principles of acceptance, fairness, equality and respect for individual rights. We strive to practice these principles in all areas of the Fellowship and our lives. Thus we do not question anyone else’s identity, presentation or preferred pronouns. In this way we maintain a boundary in order to create a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment.
This is in accordance with CoDA’s primary purpose: to carry the message to other codependents who still suffer.
Suggested announcement:
At this meeting (or event) all people are welcomed and respected. In CoDA the emphasis is on our individual growth and on taking responsibility for our own recovery without judging others. Thus we do not question anyone else’s identity, presentation or preferred pronouns. In this way we maintain a clear boundary, and we create a safe, supportive and inclusive environment for everyone.
If you think that this boundary has not been respected during the meeting or event, please ask the script reader or host to read this announcement again.
